In my recent years of nutrition research, I stumbled upon The Integrative and Functional Nutrition Academy. I’m not entirely new to Functional Medicine, as I have been seeing a practitioner for my own health concerns for a number of years. The program that they offer looked comprehensive, covering many areas of nutrition I had been researching. It is lead by two exceptionally trained women that have a long standing career in nutrition and dietetics. What I found really great about the program is that each module had a guest speaker trained in each area of speciality. I was eager to get started and continue down my new path of discovery in Integrative Health.
When talking about transforming how we practice nutrition, what does “the root cause” approach mean? It is a whole new way of looking at a patient’s state of health. How did they get to where they are, what is their story, was there a triggering event or events that was the turning point. This comprehensive approach to patient care, focuses on identifying these root causes and system imbalances to greatly improve patient health outcomes. Integrative and Functional nutrition is an emerging model that combines the very best of modern science, clinical wisdom and critical thinking. Our healthcare landscape is changing, with advancements in technology, patients are often researching and looking to alternative health practices after many failed attempts with traditional medicine. In fact, I stumbled upon Functional Medicine years ago, my Medical Doctor was changing her practice over from the traditional model to a more integrative approach – am I ever thankful for that!
